APHRODITE
The work is part of my series exploring the intersection of femininity, fragility, and power. It’s a woman’s nude torso with some excessively feminine aspects such as the flowers, but the blades that penetrate into where the skin would be on her body add an aspect of violence.

Andrei Barrett and Imaan Deen,
photos by Pasha Toub
Sourced from the viral internet trend in which street interviewers approach individuals and ask, “Would you rather have a gay son or a thot daughter?” the title of this exhibition references the homophobic and sexist structures of contemporary culture. Primarily asked by straight men, these two identities are positioned against one another under the social standards of male heterosexuality. Embodying these two archetypes, Andrei Barrett and Imaan Deen respond to these social hierarchies through appropriation and objectification. Recontextualizing popular imagery and objects, they resist the representations formed against them by Western masculinity. Instead, through their paintings, drawings, and printmaking they have formed an alternative visual language that subverts and rejects this heteronormative gaze.
Andrei Barrett (gay son) sources visual and linguistic data from social media, meme culture, and gay pornography to parody Western masculinity. Through appropriating imagery and text, he reinterprets his subject matter through a queered gaze to destabilize their patriarchal symbolism.
Imaan Deen (thot daughter) synthesizes her emotions and relationships through the translation of these intimate moments into surrealist environments and objects. Embracing her romantic and platonic relationships, she rejects the patriarchal restriction of female self-autonomy in order to create landscapes of self-liberation.

SEPTEMBER
Pictures taken on my Dad’s Childhood AE1 Canon
Laini Sharifi
This collection is made up of photos taken of people of New York on the camera my dad gifted me on my 15th birthday; he grew up shooting on this camera. It has seen many wild nights across the Midwest, Oxford England, and now New York City.

I’d Rather Be Naked Than Wear Leather: A protest organized by PETA in Washington Square Park, September 2024. Behind the camera: a group of men chanting profanities and slurs at the women brave enough to bear their cause across their bodies.

While on a mission to find gelato one Saturday night this September, I was distracted from my friends by two incredibly well-dressed girls, laughing gloriously from across the street. Fifteen minutes later, @amccah and @v3nusruledbaby were in full photo shoot mode, talking about Atlanta, New York Fashion Week and photography. Never again will I allow nerves to hold me back from complimenting the cool girls across the street, nor from offering to capture them on film.

On the same street 10 minutes prior to my encounter with the fashion baddies of Atlanta, I struck up a conversation about tattoos, piercings, and employment with two out-of-state Virginians. They were visiting NYC for the weekend and beamed when I told them I thought they fit right into the East Village atmosphere. They put their arms around each other and posed for my photo but, wanting to capture the secret giggle they continued to share when they thought the camera was off, I only snapped the shutter closed while asking questions about their lives.

A testament to saying fuck it, begone self-consciousness, and lead forth with love. Ask random people on the street their life stories and capture their essence. Play.
Reshaping Beauty

I have always been drawn to pursue creative endeavors that tell a story and articulate an identity, but with a flair. Part of that process was experimenting with different visual mediums - one of them being makeup. Through practicing and watching Youtube videos, I have blazed through trial and error to perfect my skills and learn the art of makeup. Over these last few years, I have had the privilege of developing and refining my style alongside fellow creatives.
Although I have participated in many contrasting projects, there remains one constant – my fascination with shapes and colors as they relate to one’s existing facial features. Being able to flatter these while adding a new dimension is an important aspect of my work.
I am drawn to the canvas that is the human face, as there is none quite like it. From a fresh face accentuating one’s natural features, to transformative SFX turning a person into a different being entirely, makeup truly represents freedom of expression and creativity - and in my eyes, beauty. It allows us to choose how we decide to show up in the world, day after day. The performances available to us through makeup are truly admirable and lie at the heart of my passion.

Villahormes, Spain on Film
Villahormes is a small town situated amongst a chain of Spanish vacation destinations. These towns provide easy access to the Northwestern coast of Spain, which boasts intimate beaches tucked delicately along the larger rocky shoreline. Paths meander through fields filled with calves and wildflowers, connecting the land with the Bay of Biscay. While most tourists head to the south of Spain, many Spaniards travel north to escape the heat of summer and enjoy the region's natural beauty.

HEALTHY BODIES
When I create my sculptures I like to imagine each piece having its own personality. This helps me to make shapes naturally and keeps the process exiting.

Enjoy the Birds
Each day a man sits in Washington Square Park just west of the fountain. With a small bag full of seeds, he transforms the quiet bench into an oasis for the "winged rats" of New York City. At a glance the man seems lost, passing his time by throwing spare food to birds with brains the size of a raisin. But when observed closer, the interaction radiates a sense of mutual belonging-- whenever the man trots around the park, the pigeons follow. On summer days when the sun burns the shoulders of a passerby and the air feels thick enough to pour into a cup, the man calmly spreads the seeds across the blazing pavement. When the winter wind whips around the man's ears and turns his cheeks red, the pigeons gather around him to provide warmth. Each day a man enjoys the birds, and the birds enjoy him.

The Missing Cat
This was inspired by a missing cat poster hung up in my neighborhood and the feeling of missing people and missing chances and a verb for the state of being a Ms. and having something be amiss.
